I have an 1987 yamaha 50 ELH. I plan on putting in a new water pump as there was no service history. I see that there is a chrome water pump option for use in turbid waters. I don’t know if I'll ever be in such water or, although it will never see salt water. Anyway, would this be a good idea(just in case) or would I just be wasting the extra money?

Waist of money unless you run in water full of stirred up grit/dirt.
the rubber impeller will still wear out, but the wear plate and cup will last longer.
I try to replace with the kit each time and the plate and cup come with it -
Ditto on that!..if you're running in turbid or sandy water conditions you'll probably want/need to replace your water pump kit every year anyway, and the stainless steel cup and wear plate are pretty darn tough as they are! Good Luck!Comment
