• lower unit oil

some buddies and myself were discussing lower unit oil. I've heard mechanics that have said as long as the oil level is ok, don't mess with it.

My buddy was saying you have to change it once a year.

Any thoughts?

better to replace it once a year, unless you can afford not to.

OC,
You will get different opinions on this. The book recommends replacement once a year - I don't think the oil wears out in one year, but you should inspect the oil several times a year to look for water intrusion .
If you are going to leave the oil in the lower unit and not replace, then I would recommend a synthetic like Mobil 1 gear oil (90 wt). You're not gonna' wear it out - but you still need to inspect for water intrusion on a regular basis.
Good luck ,
