  • Tilt piston leaking

(1998 Yamaha 90hp) I am getting a little bit of fuild leaking where the tilt piston comes out of the housing. I have already ordered and received the new seals, but I have been told that the whole tilt and trim assembly has to be removed from the boat to fix the problem. Is this correct? I have also been told that getting the pin out where the piston connnects to the motor is a major deal on motors more than a couple of years old. Really what I am wondering is should I tackle this myself with moderate mechanical skills. I have already replaced the trim motor and know the motor pretty well.

    saltrookie,
If you can replace the t/t motor, then I think you can handle the rest.
Scroll down and read Terry's post under "Trim Pump" by ronzoe. Terry has a manual that details power t/t rebuild for home mechanics - might be helpful.
Also, take a look at that leak again - if it is coming from around the end cap and not from around the tilt ram itself, then you might be able to just tighten the end cap a little and stop the leak. I say this, because my fishing buddy and I did this just last week on his 95 C115 - he grabbed the end cap with a pair of channel locks and put a full turn on it - bingo, stopped the leak.
    Good luck,
    Ken K
