I need to replace my emergency kill switch & lanyard. I went to test it and the spring loaded switch flew apart. the problem that i have is that i use to have an 84 200hp and now i have a 94 250 hp. it seems as though the original switch has 4 wires 2-white and 2- black. but i can not find this switch anywhere? yamaha has all 2 lead switches. 1-white and 1-black. Do i really need a 4 lead switch? So i purchased a cole herst 4 lead kill switch, but when i tried it , it does not completely shut down the motor, it seems as if it retards the ignition and definetly slows the motor but it does not stop it?

I can tell you what my 2000 C115 with 704 remote control has - it is just a two wire switch. I recently tested it by pulling the lanyard and the motor did not stop - much to my disappointment - since I use the kill switch lanyard a lot - if I get thrown out of the boat, I darn sure want that outboard to quit running.
I took the switch apart - it is just a spring loaded metal washer that is attached to the stem of the switch. The washer makes contact with the two wire contacts in the base of the switch when the lanyard clip is not in place.
I think most late model Yamahas use the two wire switch - when that lanyard is pulled, the motor should stop running immediately.

Retro fitting a lanyard kill switch Mariner 25
I know this is an old thread, but I had the same problem on my Maraha or Yamariner Sorry Mariner 25 c. 1985 . The old kill switch was a non lanyard type ( two wires white wire and a black wire) and on inspection already had a repair to the cdi feed (white wire).
I stripped the insulation and found the wire was blackened and almost appeared corroded.
Enter brand new lanyard kill switch with four pole terminals. Scratches head...two marked with a C and two marked with an M. Obtained necessary japanese style bullet connectors and soldered/crimped new lengths of cable using old ones as a template.
Attach white and black to poles marked C, doesn't matter which way round, reconnect at CDi (white wire) and ground (black wire) from whence your original was grounded. Ignore other poles unless you have electric/battery/ignition start.
Attach lanyard and fire her up!!!! feeling a little safer already!
I think it runs better since, must be bad continuity with that original cable. Maybe I'll check the stator and trigger cables at a later date?
