New to the forum with a ?

Howdy folks, I just traded for a 1991 650 waverunner. It is in very good condition but has a blown water lock. My first question is how and why did this box explode, so to speak. It has a crack across one whole side. And second, will the repair I made , hold. I sanded it down and covered the area with Marinetex.
This looks like a great forum, thanks for any help given.
