98 Outboard quits from Idle to Full Throttle

Problem: The engine will quit during the transition from idle to full throttle.
Engine: Yamaha 98 P200TLRW with Carburetors
Throttle: Hot Foot and Hand throttle for shifting
Boat: 19ft. bass boat

The engine runs very well at idle and great during full throttle. When I put the hand throttle in gear the engine quits. Sometimes when I rev the engine from idle to a higher RPM with the Hot Foot and the engine is in neutral, it will quit. To get it pass the transition from idle to full throttle, I have to keep the RPMs up to high, so I am damaging the transmission. I have replaced the spark plugs, put an in-line fuel filter, put carburetor cleaner in the fuel, and spayed carburetor cleaner in the carburetor bowls. Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, what is causing the problem and how do you fix it?

not gettin fuel under load, read the 130 carb problem post, try that method. make sure your ball is hard when it cuts out.i would check the entire fuel system, from pickup tube,seperator,hoses,junctions,fuel pumps and carbs.

I rebuilt my “3” carburetors over the weekend and my motor runs great. The top carb was a little gummed up, the middle was a little worse, and the bottom was the worst. Rebuilding the carbs was not all that difficult. I followed the steps in the Yamaha manual. I rebuilt one at a time. I took my time, so it took all day. My only concern is that the “carburetor disassembly chart” did not have any notes about the main jets being different sizes. I have a 50/50 chance I replaced them in the correct side. I noticed they were different when I was looking at the Yamaha parts list. If anyone wants to rebuild their carbs, I would be glad to post a procedure and the tools I used.

Would love to see a procedure/tools list. Also where did you get your Yamaha manual? I have a Clymer's for my engine but I didn't feel comfortable with their information doing my carbs recently so I paid a mechanic. But I would like to know for future reference the procedure/tools. Thanks.

I got my manual from Yamaha’s web site http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...home/home.aspx . I will write a procedure using the Yamaha parts diagram from their web sit as reference. The procedure will take a few days.

Good news. I checked the main jets by removing the drain plugs and to my good dumb luck I had put the jets in the correct sides.

Does it seem like it's flooding out when you tromp on it? When my old carbed Yamahas did that it was the O-ring seal on the main jets that were cracked or really distorted. They're about $5 apiece at the dealer.

I went fishing this morning and when you tromp on it, it felt like it was going to jump out of the water. It is running the best since I have had it. I bought my boat used (Yamaha 200 on a 19 ft Sprint) 4 years ago. It has always ran a little sluggish. February of 04, I had 4 bypass heart surgery, so I did not get to use it last year. October of 04, I emptied the fuel tank. The carbs were gummed up. Rebuilding the card made a world of difference. My carb is a type 64F00. It does not have any o rings around the jets.
