Yamaha 55 be

I have just bought a 14 ft speedboat and i believe my engine to be around 25 years old but not sure. Problem is i had it out on the water yesterday for the 1st time and the engine wasnt cooling, (no water coming from pin hole below cover) when i removed the plastic mesh cover from the water intake i found several bits of shredded rubber. I dont know how the cooling system works or what could possibly be wrong. Can someone help please?????

The rubber is from the water pump impeller, it needs the water pump replaced.
