running oil only from reseve tank

I can't find my owner's manual and my answer is probably in there. My problem is my main tank is full and my reserve is full and my unit keeps drawing oil only from the reserve. I tried the toggle switch with the unit off. My question is does the engine need to be running or the key in the on position when I flip the switch and do I need to manually hold the switch on for any period of time? Thanks.

The ignition key does have to be on to use the emergency override toggle switch. You van view the owners manual at www.yamaha-motor.com
Check the oil level lights or bars on tach to see which ones are displayed.
