I have a 13 whaler with a 1989 40 HP 2 stroke. I had it out lastweek, started it fine. I went to put it in gear and it died. I restarted it and could only get it to run on high idle. Once I ran it in low idle it died. I replaced the pump ball and cleaned out the fuel filter still wouldnt run. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Carb pulling and cleaning sounds like it is in your future -
carb pulling and cleaning.... is that a difficult job for a novice? Or should i just break down and pay the money to someone who knows what to do? Also I was going to change the plugs and adjust the motor idle. Do you think that could help? Thanks for the advice!Comment

A Yamaha repair/ service manual is needed to readjust linkage and carbs when put back on, but is a fairly simple job for someone with mechanical abilities with the help on the manualComment

I changed the plugs and it started right up and ran great hooked up to the earmuffs. I noticed a lot of black build up on the old plugs. I'm going to take her to the lake tomorrow and see how she does. Do you know what the best repair manual is? Thanks for the help!Comment

Well I just got back from the lake and the problem is not fixed. I put her in the water and she started right up and ran good all day. Towards the end of the day I was in idle and it died! And would not run at low
idle. The same problem i had before. I had some carb cleaner in the boat so I
sprayed some in the carbs and got it running. So I guess the next step
is to pull the carbs off and clean them. I bought a service manual online so I
will some help. Anyone got any ideas what's going
on with it?Comment

Well today I tore apart the carbs. After I got a spark plug gap tool
today. I was still trying to determine what the problem was. After I gapped the plugs at the right setting I hooked it up to the hose and it
started and ran for about 5 minutes. I noticed gas
coming out the top of the bottom carb. So I took apart all carbs and cleaned them. I also took every float appart and cleaned and
reassembled them. After putting everything back together I hooked
it up to the hose and it ran better than it has run in a long time.
But I think I won't know if I fixed the problem until I run it all day at
the lake.Comment
