1999 yamaha 4 stroke starting problem

I'm having trouble getting my engine started after it has set idle for an extended period of time. The only way I can get it started is to remove the cover and have another person at the console hit the starter, while I hold my hand over the intake opening. It starts immediatly this way and runs fine once started. It starts ok until I leave the boat sit again for a few days-then I have to repeat the procedure.
Any suggestions?

Not sure what model you have but may need to clean carbs and check choke or prime start system.
