  • 1986 40ETLJ Charging Problem

Often times the voltmeter on this motor drops well below 12v with no load. It is an intermittent problem. If I sit on the water with the radio on for awhile after this, I will not be able to restart the motor. I suspect a problem in the charging system. If I fully recharge the (brand new) battery the voltmeter usually indicates 13-15 volts for awhile. This has been an ongoing problem for several years with a different battery as well.

I was told by a marine mechanic that it only has a DC rectifier, and uses the stator as a main source of power, with no alternator or voltage regulator. Online parts list seems to confirm. He said typically a rectifier would fail altogether and not be intermittent however. Only thing I can think of is a bad connection somewhere.

    Any ideas? Thanks much!

Yes it is usually a bad connection. You can test the rectifier and lightning coil per service manual.
