The pickup hole in front edge of gearcase may be plugged up and needs to be cleaned, as water pressure increases from water pushing on pickup hole in gearcase speed increases on speedometer.

I understand what you are telling me. The hole is not plugged and water is getting to the gage. Should there be water at the back of the gage on the console or ???

Water can fill the hose up to gauge, you normally don't see much water at gauge unless the hose connection has an air leak but gauge should still work with water in hose.

When we were using the boat the other day the hose to the speed gauge came loose at the console and water was pouring from it at high speed. I reattached it and the gauge still would not work. Is this normal or ????Please explain how this works so I can troubleshoot..

What did you not understand about what he has already told you?
            Water/air pressure moves the needle
