I have a '99 250 ox66 Saltwater Series. It ran fine then suddenly slowed as if I pulled the throttle back to neutral, then revved back up. Repeated often and stalled at times.
I replaced the fuel/water separator filter (very dirty), the disposable filter in the clear container (slightly dirty), the little screen by the pressure regulator (clean) and cleaned the VST filter (also clean). The fuel in the VST tank had no sediment, but the fuel in the water separator did have some after running it a bit. It ran in the slip for a bit and smoked like hell. O2 sensor was not getting any air - cleaned it and it tested at 0.5V afterwards (in spec by the book and was 1.1V before). Smoke cleared up quite a bit, idled under power for about 2 minutes and stalled upon acceleration...towed back to slip. I noted black granules on the pump side of the VST filter and removed them. Re-ran it for a bit in the slip with no change. I tested the VST fuel pressure as the repair manual specified and it read maybe 5 PSI (should be 30 - 40). There is definately fuel getting to the VST, but pressure doesn't seem to build regardless of RPM or kinking of the fuel line or vacuum line. I don't know if it goes lower, the needle barely moves to get to 5 PSI. There are no leaks in the VST and the gasket is new.
All roads seem to point to the pump that resides in the VST, but I'm nervous about replacing a part with a MSRP of $955. Any ideas?
