  • Fuel delivery system question

I am in the process of draining all fuel from my F80LTRA as the initial step to troubleshooting a fuel problem. My tank-to-engine delivery system consists of...

Roto-Mold 24 gallon tank --> 20 inch hose UP --> ball check --> 10 Micron filter w/water separator mounted 18" above tank --> 24 inch hose DOWN --> Prime Bulb -->> 18 inch hose to motor mounted filter.

In order to drain the tank, I have separated the fuel line at the engine side of the prime bulb. Using the bulb, I can pump fuel from the tank into a container, but I can't start a siphon.

Does the Ball Check act as an anti-siphon device? Or do I have a problem in this set up that is preventing a good fuel flow to the motor?

In other words, should I be able to siphon fuel from the tank through the fuel lines?

The motor is getting fuel to the filter. My initial diagnosis is a clogged carb filter on the top carb. I say this because when I drained the float bowls of old fuel, the top carb was dry, but the other three flowed gas from the drain.

This motor has not run in over 18 months. It died on the water two seasons ago. Last spring I replaced all fuel delivery components on the tank side of the motor mounted filter, but gave up trying to fix it when I burned up the starter motor.

My boat dealer removed my anti-siphon valve and now I am using a Evinrude/Johnson pump-up ball assy with no fuel flow problems. The ball check assy sticks preventing fuel flow...if that is what you are asking ????
You can punch it out....(the ball & seat)

      Thanks Dorf -

I guess what I'm asking -Is that ball-check an anti siphon device?

the fuel is only supposed to flow one way....to the motor.....are you trying to get it to flow backwards ?

Yes it is an anti-siphon device. supposed to stop fuel flow if a leak down stream so fuel will not siphon out.

But ! it corrodes/sticks and reduces fuel flow to the engine. It is a one-way valve.

            Thanks. That answers the question.

To answer jb123: I was hoping to siphon off the contents of the tank using the bulb to start the siphon. I couldn't get a siphon started. I ended up using the bulb to pump the tank dry. Luckily there was less than 3 gallons in the tank.
