lower unit shift problems

Lower unit will not shift into gear after replacing the shift leaver. The leaver clicks like it is in gear, but the gears are not meshing together. Is it possible that the shift pin has come unhinged on the inside or do I have bigger problems? 1998 30hp yamaha.

Not sure what you removed to replace parts you replaced but if gearcase off then may not have shift shaft union nut back on correctly.
