I have a 1992 40 horse Yamaha tiller motor. I had to adjust the shift rod last year to get the motor to go in reverse and used it all summer with no problems. I just put it in the water for the first time this year and now it will not go in forward or reverse. The linkage is moving half way down (where you can make the adjustment), but the prop is easily turned when the shift lever is engaged fully in forward or reverse. Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Remove lower unit and see if gearcase will shift if operate shift shaft by hand, if not then have a problem inside gearcase. That nut is not an adjustment, it's the union nut to join upper and lower shaft togather, the only adjustment is the shift cable end adjustment where shift cable connects to shift linkage.
