  • 250 HPDI Engine Failure

I recently purchased a boat with 2003 250 HPDI engines. One of the engines has damage to the #2 rod, crank and cylinder. I replaced the power head but have concern as to why the engine blew to begin with.

I had the engine serial numbers researched and this boat has had numerous power head replacements while under warranty.

I've read a number of post dating back to 2004. It appears that this kind of engine failure is well known and it appears that the #2 rod and crank has been the main location of failure.

Has anyone figuired out how to keep the 3.3 litre motors from blowing up? Will adjusting the oil linkage to run richer help save cranks?

Thanks in advance for your input.

There was an oil pump update to resolve the problem, check the number on the oil pump lever, it should have number "60V13" on lever is has the new oil pump, "60V03" if it's a VZ250 V Max model.

What a Great site. Thanks for the info. The engines do have the 60V13 pumps. Can you tell me where the rod adjustment should be?

Here is the correct procedure as some service manuals were incorrect.
