  • No Start, No Spark, T9.9EL

Hi all, first post, have approx 10 year old 9.9 hp Yamaha on sail boat. Just replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, oem engine oil and filter, lower unit lube and was prepared for year on the bay. After this maintenance, ran for 1/2 hour or so and shut down. Replaced fuel with fresh gas and towed 250 miles. Unloaded and so far so good. Tied off and using remote shifter to prime engine, motor started and died, restarted and reved to about 1500 rpm and died again. Repumped fuel squeezer and started and stalled again. No more starts, pulled spark plugs and had piece of carbon across electrode. Used business car and cleaned and tested for spark. NO SPARK. Called marine shop we purchaced from and suggested safety switch on remove control possible problem. Looked normal, removed clip and worked switch several times and tried again. No spark. Called shop again and suggested unplugging main lead. Could not find a major plug, so unplugged individual colored wires one at a time, still no spark. I have the basic CLYMER Yamaha manual and have checked the wiring, but really not having any luck. Any thought greatly appreciated. Thanks for your interest. Wayne.

You can disconnect the main harness(one from ignition switch to engine) at engine and use a remote start button connected to starter solenoid, crank engine over and check for spark. If have spark then there is a problem with ignition switch, or landyard switch or wiring.

Thanks for your reply about unplugging lead from switch, located in remote throttle/shifter to engine. I could not locate a disconnect plug, as in possible being hard wired, no easy disconnect?? The boat is 250 miles away and will be heading there in several weeks. When the wiring is disconnected by what ever means, cut and splice, and doesn't have spark what next several steps would you advise? Thanks again for your reply.

The main harness connector is on engine, it should have a connector on it but if not then disconnect the white wire in main harness from engine.

          No spark

Just got back from marina, unplugged white wire from main cable, remote shifter to bullet connector looked like it was going to cdi unit. Is this the grounding wire that cdi would loose spark if shorted to ground, so by unplugging from cdi and still not having spark would indicate bad coil?? Thanks again for all the help.

That was a quick 3 weeks.
you can measure the pulsar coil, charge coil, and ignition coils ohms and compare with specs in your manual.
You also need to measure the peak voltage inputs to the CDI and the out puts. This takes a special meter or a regular meter with a DVA adapter and compare to specs.
This should indicate where the problem is located.

              Waiting.

Hi all again. Still raining in our area, but checking in my manual feel not sufficient amount of information to check pulsar coil, ignition coil or cdi system. Have contacted Outboard Motor Repair Technician and should be able to check out in couple weeks. Will post what repairs were necessary so may be helpful to someone in future. Thanks all again. Wayne.
