Problem With Reverse 50 hp Yamaha

I have a 1984 50 HP Yamaha when I put it in reverse there is a grinding noise as it goes into reverse and then the motor starts to ****. Everything goes find in forward no grinding and it runs smooth. Any ideas on the problem.

Lower unit. Drain the oil out and catch the oil in a clean white container and inspect for metal.
