  • Voltage Runs Amuk on "94" 50hp????

Underway the voltage climbs along with the rpm until the depth finder shuts down at 16 volts. We've done the obvious stuff. Any suggestions? Thanks

    George,
Sounds like you have rectifier/regulator problem - it is probably one unit on your model Yamaha. Best to get yourself a Yamaha shop manual.
yamahapubs.com is a good place for the manual and boats.net a good place for parts.
    Good luck,
    Ken K

Thanks Ken, We put a regulator in. The old one checked out OK. Then a cdi unit, again the old one checked out OK. We've got a manual and checked with a multitester. Is there anything else that would cause this? It seems to me it would have to be the regulator. But why would it overcharge with the new regulator installed just as it did with the first one? We tested the new regulator and that was good. Thanks for your time. Geo

        George,
Replacing the regulator should have fixed the problem - its times like this that you scratch your head and start looking for bad connections. I would start with the battery and check all connections - both terminals. Then check all connections to/from the regulator. Also, check any fuses and their holders for poor connection.
Sounds like the regulator is not getting the proper signal/voltage that it needs, and that could be due to a poor connection on a lead.
        Good luck,
        Ken K
