Good afternoon! I'm a message board rookie so here goes. My outboard has a green wire (10-12 gauge) leading from the engine (not part of the main harness)to the battery compartment. When connected to the negative battery post (green for ground!) engine loses power and appears to draw voltage directly from battery (volt meter reads 6-7 volts), when disconnected it runs fine and volt meter jumps up to 14-15 volts. Any idea what the green wire is for. Thanks from Canada!

dyckster,
I have a 2000 Yamaha C115 and I cannot find a green wire that speak of - if I were you, I would insulate the end of the green wire in the battery compartment and not connect it to anything for now. Get yourself a Yamaha shop manual for your model outboard (it will pay for itself) and try to locate the green wire in the wiring diagrams to see what its function is. As long as motor is running fine, and all other functions are ok, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck,
Ken K
