  • Correct Prop

After my incident this past weekend, I have learned quite
a lot about props. Most folks have no idea when you asked
them what size prop they are running on there boat. I for
one did not know for certain.

My Dealer put a 19 inch pitch and a 14 ? cannot remember exact
on the 14 maybe 14 1/8. Anyway after breaking part of the cavitation
plate, the prop shop told me my prop needed to be reworked. When
he asked what my WOT rpm's were (5100) he said that my motor
was straining. Okay I have spoken to a mechanic as well as yamaha,
and I have a F-150TXR 4 stroke which is from 5000-6000. The closer
you get to 6000 the better they stated. I have a 2170 Blazer Bay.
I also called the Blazer Factory and they use a 19 inch yamaha prop.
Now I have a mirage avenger that my Dealer uses.

I questioned my Dealer & told him that a mechanic as well as the
prop shop said my motor was under a strain. He explained that he
intentionally uses that prop size & keeps it at those rpm's because
it does well on hole shot & midrange. He said if I wanted a 17 inch
pitch I could try one out, but that I would not be happy. He then asked
have you had any problems at all till this incident. The motor is around
4yrs old & I have almost 200 hours with no problems. He suggested that
I go ahead and let them re-work the prop & not worry about it.

He did say that the optimum prop for that boat was a 19 inch black
painted SS yamaha prop. He said it handled better then any other prop
they ever tried, but customers did not like the painted prop. They wanted
the shiny prop, and that is why he no longer used them.

One other thing is I was also told that you can have the exact same prop
for the manufacturer & they can perform differently.

You know this all confusing for someone who just fishes. At this point I
have to place faith in one of them. My Dealer was a master mechanic
& held the racing circuit for 7 years till he got bored. Now I don't get
into racing but I am told that someone like that knows performance
& boats well. The only thing he was a mercury master mechanic.

So I guess some will say you need to get to 6000 or your hurting
the motor. Yamaha did not say it would hurt. In fact they state
5000-6000 is the operating range. So were are yalls opinions??

I would agree with your mechanic, that engine develops 150hp at about 5500 rpm's. Propping to high side of range will help improve hole shot, better fuel economy and is better for the engine.

I was mistakened about my WOT rpm's. I live near the coast so
we tide flows/winds & such affect performance as you know. I was
able to trim up the motor running against an incoming tide & I got
it up to 5500 rpm's. I thought I should set the record straight. I
have spoken to a few folks who have the yamaha reliance 13 3/4x
19 inch with the same rig as mine, and it performs better then my
michigan avenger 19 inch. I am not certain it is worth spending the
extra money for now. If I got a deal I could not refuse, well that is
      another story.
