I broke the bracket the holds the shift shaft which goes from under the motor thru the upper casing down to the lower unit. Does anyone know what the process is? I have a repair manual, but it does not cover this bracket replacement.

You would have to remove engine to get shift shaft out of bracket and replace bracket, you would need new powerhead gasket.

how did you break this ? i am dealing with that bracket now as that zirc fitting it quite hidden.

Puting the lower casing back on after water pump replacement.

Thanks, I thought I would have to remove the power head, but figured I would ask before doing so. Thanks for the heads up on the gasket.

This is my second summer with that motor and I still haven't found that zerk fitting, and I got the book! I do remain courious though; how did you break that shift rod installing the lower unit? Just put some grease on it and feel it in right?
