Controls from one Yamaha 40 to another?

I have an '84 Yamaha 40 hp 20" shaft two stroke w/controls that I have ran for awhile. The motor itself has been a constant pain, and I've found a '96 yamaha 2 stroke 40hp 20" shaft for sale, w/o controls. Can I use my controls on this outboard? Or are they not compatible? Thanks for any help!

The 84 used pull to open throttle and 96 used push to open. If you have binnacle control box you can change it from pull to push to open inside control box. If you have a side mount control box then would need to buy a new throttle arm for control box which can be difficult to install. It's easier to replace control box if has side mount, use 703-48207-17-10 side mount control box.
