I have a 1985 yamaha 140 hp outboard. My trim gauge stopped working. The gauge was a 4 wire one, wires coloured grey, pink, orange and black.
I suspected a gauge fault so purchased a new gauge but discovered it was a 3 wire one. It does not have the grey wire.
When the ignition is on the gauge shoots to the top of the gauge and stays there at all times, including when the motor is fully down. I purchased a new sender unit as well, part number 6E5-83672-01 and nothing changed.
My question is, will the 3 wire gauge work with the 4 wire sender unit? I understand the pink and orange wires are the ones which control the sender unit output back to the gauge so I would imagine the gauge should work. From other posts I have read the grey wire is an alarm and the black is obviously an earth.
Any help is appreciated.
