Yesterday while warming my engine up to check oil I noticed a slight tapping sound coming from starboard side. Audible from behind engine, slightly louder than injector noise. Not a clacking sound like you hear in cars with valve train noise, but a tap. Again, you had to be listening for it. Checked oil, level good. It is cold out and engine hadn't run in a few days, so maybe that had something to do with it?
Ran boat, performed flawless from idle to WOT of 6000RPM. No tapping or valve train noise underway. Listened for noise upon return and not present. Also, didn't hear it so much by valve covers but more behind engine around ECM cover. I am thinking maybe an injector tapping more loudly than others? I have noticed that injectors on these engines make noise. Also, what in the valve train would tap, as the camshaft rides directly on the valve bucket/cam follower(no rockers or lifters to clatter)? Whenever I have heard DOHC motors make valve noise it sounded more like clatter and sometimes engine sounded like a diesel. This is just quiet tap more audible than injectors...
