  • 9.9 high thrust harness

I have old 9.9EXRX high thrust 4 strokes that I am replacing with new 9.9GEXH manual tilt high thrust 4 strokes with the remote control kit. This is a dual motor application for a catamaran sailboat.

My question is that the new harness is 10 pin and my old harness is 7 pin. The 7pin to 10 pin adapter will not work as it is apparently "backwards". Is there an adapter that I can order so I can use my old harness without replacing it with a new one. (the routing of a new one would be a lot of extra work). Thanks.

No Yamaha only has the one 7-10 pin adapter harness. The throttle opening may be different as well, the 1999 motor requires throttle cable to pull to open throttle and newer motors require throttle to push to open. Check to see if your control pushes throttle cable end when throttling up.
If you have side mount control box then would need to change to a 703-48207-17-10 10 pin push to open control box. If you have 704 binnacle control would need to reposition throttle lever in control box to make push to open.

I have an ultraflex dual control and have reversed the throttle cable cam to push but the problem is using the old harnesses. I'd like to just drop in the new motors and use the old harnesses. Will I have to get new harnesses or is there a harness end fitting pigtail that I could splice on to the old harness that would fit the new one from the motor. Thanks

Changing the harness would be the best way to go, Yamaha doesn't have adapters or harness ends that would work.
The harness between key switch and engine are part numbers
        6X3-8258A-00-00 16ft 10 pin Harness
        6X3-8258A-10-00 20ft 10 pin Harness

Thanks, I guess I'll have to go that route.

Just a follow up. I installed two new 9.9 GEXH outboards that the dealer installed the remote kit. By good fortune since this model did not heve the electric tilt the remote kit had the 7 pin harness so no modifications were needed. Just plug and play. Many other PDQ boat owners (these sailboats were designed for the 9.9 high thrust manual tilt) have gone with the GEXR electric tilt but that model's remote kit comes with the 10 pin harness so they need to replace their harness and binnacle.

I'm glad I just had to drop in the new motors without much problem.
