  • Prop hitting Trim Tab

I just bought an after market SS prop 13 3/8 x 15 pitch. My other alum. prop is 13 1/2(I think) x 13. the diamater really isn't the issue with contact but the depth of the throat of the prop is.

The alum. prop is 6 1/4 from the front of the prop to the back edge. My new SS is 6 3/4. That half inch throws the prop blades too far out and they make contact (I didn't run it to find out I just turned the prop) with the trim tab.

    Four questions

1: Does the added 1/2 of throat cause any problems with balance on the lower unit?

2: Can I trim off the 1/4 inch or so from the trim tab to get blade clearance

3: Is there a trim tab that off sets forward so I can get clearance with out having to "customize" mine.

4: I ran the motor yesterday with the trim tab off and it didn't seem to run any different. Is the trim tab just a anod or does it serve a purpose?

If motor has no torque pull without trim tab then maybe just grind off some of trim tab fin for prop clearance and reinstall trim tab for it's sacrificial anode purposes. Good Luck!

Motor ran straight and true yesterday with the trim tab completely removed. Turned fine, ran straight.

That's great, then just grind fin for prop clearance and re-install on cavitation plate so you'll have corrosion protection. No problem!

Thanks Robert. That was my gut reaction but most times my gut reaction ends up costing me some kinda money
