  • Tricks to removing screws

I need to replace the trim pots on both my 200HP 1991 outboards. Eachhas two screws holding it on to the bracket assembly. They have been in since new. They are frozen and I am scared of breaking the screw heads off or damaging the philips/ straight screw head. Is there a trick or just brute force

Try an impact thing... the type that you hit with a hammer after a good dose of PB Blaster or the like.

A apex holder, for a phillips or common bit , then back it out using an 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet

Last resort there are special bits that you can drill in the center and then reverse the bit to use a n electric drill to back it out, if you snap the head.

Last-Last resort just drill it out and re-tap. If reallly bad NAPA has a great assortment of helicoil kits.. all sizes.

What Dorf said. You can also try some heat just be careful.
