I have a 04 90hp 2stroke that runs fine except for the fact that it burns about a gallon a mile on a 198 dlx carolina skiff, this is at regular cruising (around 30 rpm) is this normal? any ideas?
thanks.
Same motor as mine. Go to: Yamaha Outboard Performance Bulletins and get specs on fuel flows/GPH/MPG,GPM,etc. for your boat/motor combination. I know my 90HP 2 stroke really sucks the fuel at wide open throttle around 5500RPM's, the belletin says best fuel efficiency is on plane around 3500RPM's, so I usually cruise in the 2500 to 3500RPM range, just on plane. Good Luck!
The bulletin shows for the 90HP 2 stroke Yamaha should be in the 4.5 to 5.5Miles Per Gallon range. If you're burning a gallon per mile must be a problem, maybe your hull is covered with banacles or seaweed or other marine stuff that would create great drag. Maybe a bad fuel pump diaphram sucking lots of fuel through the motor. Run motor hard, turn it off, check spark plugs for extra rich mixture on one of the plugs. New fuel pump...about $45..easy to replace. Good Luck!
with a bad lp pump you will see a gas sheen on water, pump ball while running to see if it makes motor bog down. you can also unbolt it, pump ball, if gas comes out of vac port on rear, replace.
what i DONT understand is that you say it runs normally.
