  • Bad Battery, Solenoid or Relay?

I've got a 1999 Yamaha 60 hp (C60TLRX) motor and tried to start it the other day and it would hardly turn over. I had the starting battery on the charger all day and the "full charge" light on the charger was on. It turned over twice and then I heard a pssss sound and looked at the motor and there was a little puff of smoke coming from the positive battery cable just before it went in to the motor. The cable was very hot to the touch. There is now a small opening on the cable where the smoke escaped. I can only assume the cable was melting and the smoke had to exit somewhere! Yesterday I switched batteries and tried starting using my deep cycle battery from my *****ing motor. Motor hesitated for about a 1/2 second then it turned over as if nothing was wrong. Would a bad battery cause the problem mentioned above? Could it be a bad solenoid or relay?

Could be a bad battery, poor cable connections or bad cables. Have battery load tested, Probably need to replace battery lug on cable that burnt and check cables.

Thanks for the quick reply! How do I test the battery load? Volt meter?
I was thinking of replacing the battery cables since they got hot enough to melt a hole in it.

if it has yamaha battery cables i would put my money on them being bad. they are notorious for getting weak spots in them particularly over 5 years old or more then check all connections from the battery to the ground and from the positive side of the battery to the solenoid
