  • '89 225 Excel. was at 5400 the dropped to 4800 then back up

Hi guys. I have had this happen at mid-range last year and got help from you guys. I changed out the fuel hoses to the engine as well as new fuel pumps. It improved quite a bit.

Took it out this weekend. Had a pop at starting, but that seemed normal. Was going at 5400 and like a light switch, dropped to 4800. When it did that in mid-range, I always had WOT at 5400 or even 5600. I backed off, and after a couple of minutes, the RPM's came back.

Any thoughts? I didn't notice a miss during this. Thanks

Not quite sure about your problem, but maybe you can help me a bit with mine. I have that same engine and I have my main jets mixed up on my workbench. Could you take a look at what are stamped on the ends of yours? One side should be 160 and the other should be 168 I believe. I just don't know which ( port or starboard). They should be visible on the sides of your fuel bowls 12mm brass hex head.

On your issue, are you getting any detonation ( ping / rattle) out of it? it may be retarding your spark advance which would drop your RPM's / power. Are you running premium in it? Plugs look ok?

I will look tomorrow. I have seen here some great diagrams. Have you poked around?

On my issue. I cleaned out the fuel ffilter that is on the engine. Was pretty clean, but some residue. I also changed out the plugs. I thought about it and they have not been changed this season.

I took it out on along run. Followed my budday to Freport so he could drop of his 2004 Evinrude 200. My Yamaha ran real good. It did it's normal drop of 200 or so at 4300-4200. At WOT it was on the money.
      Thanks

      PS, I always run premium.

roger that, I checked out one of the exploded view parts diagrams and got the answer I needed. Thanks 168 is starboard according to the pics. ( correction, that is in relation to the flow through the carb, not in relation to the boat which is port as the carbs point aft )

A pop at low speed is a sign of lean running, may need to remove and clean carbs.

            Update

The boat absolutely screams now and has a smooth idle down to 5-600 RPM. I was out only the time and half dozen o-rings.

Cleaned 18 white bass for my effort last night.

            good fishing all!!

Thanks. BTW, does this motor have an O2 sensor?

5-600 in gear would be OK. Neutral should be 7-750. Glad to see you are running good.
