  • 1988 25hp running poor at higher rpms'

    Hello,
1988 precision blend, 25hp, 2-stroke, dual carbs, manual start, tiller..use is about 30hrs/year july-aug the rest of the year in indoor storage.

At the start of the 08 season engine started to run poorly durning acceleration up to WOT. Idle is fine, running out of water on a hose is fine in neutral, fwd, rev, at all rpm's . When placed in water she starts right up but after warm up when you accurate it begins to shudder, miss and hesitate until you go back to idle. Tell tail is pissing strong, lukewarm, and plenty of 2 stroke oil in oil tank. No low oil condition no overheat condition to cause her to go into safe mode, no warning light.

We started with basics replacing, Fuel filter, fuel line/bulb, cleaned tank and inspected for water. NO CHANGE IN CONDITION.

WE REPLACED (not rebuilt) both carbs, bottom carb includes new fuel pump. Here where it gets strange, we now have the same problem but it is intermittent, starts right up, goes perfect all the up to WOT for a while and then it begins to shudder, miss and hesitate until you go back to idle.
We were so frustrate we put engine way until last weekend.
WE REPLACED the thermostat, and inspected every wire and component on the engine for wear, all is good.
LAUNCHED BOAT, started on 3rd pull, let all the fogging oil burn out. In gear and ran boat up to WOT, ran like new for 2 hours, shut her down and we were happy.
Launched the next day started right up idle perfect, accelerate, and then BOOM it begins to shudder, miss and hesitate until you go back to idle.
    BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
This situation of running good then not has me and my mechanic son very confused. Some posts talk about SYNC AND LINK after carb work, some talk about timing some talk about removing flywheel, but how do you explain, running so good then not.
    ANY SUGGESTION WOULD HELP.
    THANK YOU

Put a new water pump in it, test the oil level sensor. If that doesn't do it then it could be an ignition problem.
