Ok...The final word is that pump was shot. I guess at the bottom of the pump there is the pickup screen and inside there is a plastic impeller. That was broken and pieces of it could be seen inside on the screen. The mechanical pumps had pressure readings of 5-10 psi. The mechanic said he could see varnish lines on the VST which he cleaned up well. He installed the new pump and it started right away. Pressure readings of 35-40 psi were attained. It runs very smooth now and starts like a champ. $835 was the total bill. The pump was $637 of that.
I do thank everyone who replied to my posting and to everyone who posts all this helpful information. Because of it, I had actually figured out what was wrong before taking it to the shop but due to the high cost of the pump I had to be sure before spending this much.
