Ok...The final word is that pump was shot. I guess at the bottom of the pump there is the pickup screen and inside there is a plastic impeller. That was broken and pieces of it could be seen inside on the screen. The mechanical pumps had pressure readings of 5-10 psi. The mechanic said he could see varnish lines on the VST which he cleaned up well. He installed the new pump and it started right away. Pressure readings of 35-40 psi were attained. It runs very smooth now and starts like a champ. $835 was the total bill. The pump was $637 of that.

I do thank everyone who replied to my posting and to everyone who posts all this helpful information. Because of it, I had actually figured out what was wrong before taking it to the shop but due to the high cost of the pump I had to be sure before spending this much.

      bad electrical pump? VST

i too pulled the pump out of the VST, then hooked it up to 12 volts at the terminals , then reversed pos and neg. , then tried the 24 volt routine. during each attempt i got no luck/movement. I guess the pump is also shot.

Yea it sure sounds like it is shot. I wonder if a piece of the impeller broke off and is stuck inside the pump. Either way, I think you need a new pump. Mine was ordered from Buy Yamaha Outboard, Mercury Outboard, Johnson Outboard and Evinrude Outboard Parts at 25% Off. . It was $637, including shipping. Another tip too....it is a good idea I guess to drain the VST tank before storage.

Hey all, new member here but not new to yamahas or fixing outboards. Wondering what everyone is using for a fuel pressure gauge and where I can pick one up? I seem to have a bad pump too but want to confirm before putting out that kind of money. Any leads on where to source on much appreciated.
