VX 225 being thrown into protection mode???

I got a Yamaha VX 76-degree 225 salt water series 2 cilinder motor. The motor was running fine for a trip or two. Then on the next trip when I would floor the motor and get up to the max speed the motor would go into protection mode and wouldn't let me go over 1700 rpm. So after using the motor a bit more with out flooring the motor seemed to be running fine. On the next trip I left the harbor and the motor went right into protection mode. I took the motor to some yamaha guys and they said that when the motors go into protection mode that the computer should record any codes being thrown. There weren't any codes on my computer and now I am confused on how to pursue the problem. I have a trip planned for Canada in three weeks and I desperatley need to resolve this probolem. If anyone has any information at all I would greatly appreciate it.

do you have digital or analog gauges?
if digital what error?
sounds like an overheat from prv if is at the higher rpms.
check the main oil tank level when this happens also
