lower unit cracked

hi all new here , i was goin to replaces seal because oil leaking and found a crack in housing where seal go just below water pump. could these be welded or some sort of epox no moving parts but not much room to work.it a 25 hp yamaha 1995
or . any one with used one for sale any idea out there

depending on the exact location and size of the crack, you could remove the old seal, drain all the lower unit oil and take the motor to a good welding shop and have it welded up, preferably with a fairly heavy bead if aluminum on the outside of the case to add strength. there are some "cooler" type of welding which will not overheat the case and require removal of internal gears and parts. put in your new seal, fill with lower unit oil and you should be good to go. welding might be $50 or $100 dollars, a whole lot cheaper than replacing that lower case, even with a used one! good luck!

well, you could try to fill the crack up with JB Weld Epoxy Metal, but it won't be near as good as welding....

JB Weld...

If there's no stress on that spot ( not sure why it would crack then...) you should have good luck with the JB Weld, that stuff is incredibly strong. Just depends on the area that's cracked. Only one way to find out really.

Autozone, Advance Auto, Walmart, most anywhere. wire brush/sand the area around the crack to remove all paint in the area of the crack, leave surface rough for good adhesion of JB Weld epoxy. They make a 24 hour cure and a quick 4 minute cure version of JB Weld...either will work depending on how much of a hurry you're in to use the motor after repair. I'd give it a full 24 hours to cure anyway, just to be sure. after you force it into the crack then you can build up a bead around the general area to add strength. after it starts to cure a bit, you can use your finger tips to work it like you want it.
