40 HP 2 Stroke ran out of oil?'s

Hello there,

I own a 40hp prob 4-5 years old. My oil alarm has recently stopped working and while riding home the other night after snook fishing my boat kinda just shut down. I knew it was something not good. Anyways i quickly found out that i was out of oil. I put more oil in and it started back up and I made it home.

Is there anything I should do? Did anything get seriously damaged? It appears to be running ok out of the water now. I looked at my plugs and they were pretty fouled up.

Any info at all would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It should be ok but check compression on each cylinder

Thanks for the response. I have been doing a bit more of research and it appears that they are designed to shut off in case something like that happens.

I will check the compression on that. If the compression levels are off im guessing its time to take it in to the shop? What does it mean if the compression is bad?

Thanks for the help. I dont really know too much about outboard engines, and definitely appreciate all the information.
