  • 25 Horse Power Cowling.

My friend and I recently bought a 25 horsepower, 2 stroke, short shank, tiller driven yamaha motor. The first time we were on the river, we hit a stump at low speed. The motor kicked up a little and the calden popped off and sunk in the river before we could get back to it. I have friend of mine that had this happen to them a while back. Does anyone know if that might be something that is warrentied? I am sure there must be some type of deffect with the latch or something. If it is not something warrantied, anyone have a used one they want to sell or where i might be able to pick one up?

    Kyle,
Go to ebay.com and do a search on "yamaha outboard". I have seen quite a few motor cowlings up for auction there. Other than that, check with boats.net - their service and prices are pretty darn good.
When you get the new hood, there should be at least one spring lock at the front and two at the back. The spring locks are actually mounted in the lower cowling, while the locking pins are mounted in the upper cowling. When you install the hood, make sure you hear all three locks snap in place. If you don't, you need to adjust the ones that don't. After snapping the hood in place, always grab it and pull, both at the back and front just to check it.
    Good luck,
