2005 waverunner clicking

I have a 2005 vx1100 deluxe yam waverunner. When I try to start it all I get is a clicking sound and some smoke comes from the wire connected to the starter. I put a brand new battery on there and the same thing. What do you think? starter? If it is the starter i guess the whole engine has to come out?

Yes either the starter or the wire connections at starter. You get starter off by removing exhaust system.
