Motor is a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke with maybe 10 hours. It has been about a year since the motor was last started. I put motor in a test tank with fresh fuel in gas tank. Motor started right up but smoked (looked white to me) for a second then stopped. There was what looked like oil floating on top of water in the test tank. Motor ran fine. I started the motor 3 other times and there was no smoke. Do I need to have the motor checked out?

May have been stored in wrong position, needs to be stored upright on a stand or laying on side with tiller handle down or oil can drain into intake.

Sounds right. Often the oil floods the cylinder and you have hydrolock and cannot pull starter (remove spark plug to flush excess oil). This is a very annoying "feature" of a removable 4-stroke. I reverted to a 2 stroke on my dinghy.
