Like the title says, my starter tries to engage with the motor running at idle. In gear, it doesn't. I assume this to be because with the throttle in gear, the starter cannot engage. I commute with my boat and over the last winter here on Vancouver Island, I had intermittent problems with the ignition not getting the starter to start or light up the gauges on the console. Mostly when it was below freezing (we only get down to a few degrees below zero here now and then) At the time, I squeezed some dielectric grease into where the key goes and it seemed to help for a while. Now the exact opposite is happening, the starter tries to start the already running motor...
Any ideas, or has anyone experienced this problem before I go and replace the ignition cylinder?
On a side note I cannot find a replacement part number for the little rubber cover that goes over the keyhole to keep rain out. I have the smaller diameter prime start cylinder and can only find larger diameter covers. As far as I can tell Yamaha doesn't sell my sized cover separately. Crazy...
cheers, Mike...
