Rectifier on fire! 100hp 4 stroke

I have a 1999 yamaha 100 hp 4 stroke outboard, the rectifier went out, it actually started on fire, what would cause this?

Probably a shorted regulator. Check battery cables are in good condition and connections are clean and tight.
