  • Oil Pump Sensor??????

OK..I have been messing with this thing for the last week trying to figure it out. Here is what I have found.

    1. The oil is not coming from the main tank to the smaller tank on the side of the engine.

    2. Oil is pumping from the small tank on the motor like it is supposed to. ( I can run the boat as long as I refill the small tank every so often, no problem, just a pain.)

    3. The Low oil alarm is working fine.(whew)

    4. When the oil alarm goes off, the oil pump does not start pumping oil into the small tank on the motor ( I am sure it should pump before the alarm goes off)

    5. The oil pump works..took it off, checked connectons, and tested it.

    6. No lines are clogged.

It seems to me that a sensor or something is not telling the oil pump to kick in when it needs to?

Any ideas? I am still running the boat since I can put oil into it manually ( could also pre mix if I knew how to disconnect the alarm) I would like to fix it myself if possible or atleast narrow it down before I take it to the shop.

    Thanks

sounds to me as if the motor mounted tank isnt ASKING for oil , as if that sensor is out,or not functioning as intended. pull it out of the tank, which would indicate low/no level, and see if it sets off the alarm, vertically as it sits in the tank. also turn it upside down ,to see if it changes,as in full. the same can be dome with the main tank level indicator. also you might want to check your harness ends for any corrosion and lubricate. I am sure there are volt/ohm tests for the sensors unfortunately i dont know them, maybe another member will respond. Please let us know your fix !!

If you will replace the tank sensor your problem will more than likely be solved. Assuming you have done the previous test and it probably did not affect anything which means the sensor is not working. Also, this only tells the remote tank to pump oil to the small tank, the smaller tank then gravity feeds to the engine pump which then pumps to each oil line.

If you can feed oil into the engine's tank using the emergency toggle switch (key must be ON...) then the problem is with the switch inside the engine's tank. If you can not fill the engine's tank using the emergency toggle switch then the problem is with the wiring harness or the remote tank's pump (rare).

Although you did mention that no lines are clogged...

I had this same exact problem. And when I tried to use the emergency switch, it still would not fill the main tank. The problem was that the little inline filter attached to the bottom of the large "reserve tank"* under the seat was clogged and needed replacement. Fixed it right up.

Please be careful when filling the tank on the engine directly! You must practice very good funnel hygene as there will be NO FILTER between what you are putting in that tank and the VRO oil pump. Little junk getting into the check valves of the pump caused me problems with oil draining out through the carbs while tilted up (at least that's now my final analysis on what happened to me).

*(I have 1 1989 225 V6 Excel. The smaller tank mounted on the engine is referred to as the "main tank" and the larger one under the seat that fills that is called the "reserve tank".)

Check continuity on all wires going to remote tank. I had a problem with the same symptoms as yours and one of the wires was pinched,no continuity.Disconnect harness at both ends and test for continuity.
