fuel water seperator

I am getting ready to install a yamaha mini 10 fuel water seperator on my 2005 50tlrd. Question is do i need to put fuel in the filter before installing or just prime the bulb until it gets hard. Have heard different opinions on this and would like a 3rd. thanks.

Filling with fuel does make primeing for the first time a little easier.
