  • 70 cdi -stator melted

Just bought a boat with a 70tlrp on it. Came with motor damage. Cdi is completly melted and charge and lighting coils are charred in stator assembly also.. Rectifier appers ok. All wires going to charge and lighting coils are charred also. This engine has been ran is salt water but there is no corrosion at all in any of the electrical connections. With all of these componets melted it is very hard to figure out where ground zero is. What could have caused this? Motor ran perfict last time ran, Sat for a few months and when gone to start it wouldn't, This damage was found. Don't want to replace parts until positive of problem, to prevent happing again. Any ideas. Thanks

Souds like you have a short allowing battery voltage into ignition system.

If one of the charge coils came uncoiled and shorted against the flywheel would it cause a short that could melt the cdi? One of the coils is melted and unwound. About only suspect I can come up with.. What do you think????
