F225 out drive problems

Having trouble shifting into forward/reverse.
Very stiff, still works, but getting worse.
Checked the cables, no problem, so it must be in my lower unit.
Has any one repaired (successfully!) their own?
What special tools are required.
Any tips or tricks?
I'm very handy, having rebuilt my 115 and 225 4-strokes over the years, and have the factory manual.

Hi Kevin, before you take the lower unit apart, have you disconnected the cables at the motor and checked if the problem went away? Sometimes a visual only inspection of the cables is not enough.

Yep, first thing.
Cables run free when not attached.

did you run motor with cable unattached and engage gears by hand ?

No haven't tried that, what would it tell me?

if unit engages via hand it is good, just because cables move they may be out of adjust

whats bad and you did not see it spammers get on the thread
I know its hard for the mideators to catch it all
but the ****s a little bit my 8 year old looks stuff up for me whem iam out side
but after the other day thats not going happen anymore
