Need to replace the water pump in my 89 Yami 70hp outboard. I have removed the 5 bolts and was expecting to tap and catch the lower unit.

It appears to be hung up. I have gently tapped with my palm. The unit is loose from the trst of the outboard but it appears to be still attached.... possibly the drive shaft. How do I disconnect the linkage and where?


Any suggestions or links to a How To would be great. I have a repair manual but it is pretty vague..

If you have taken a the bolts out and got the case to drop a small distance, its possible that the drive shaft has rusted in place or has spun inside the crank.

Saltwater use?

The shifter itself should easily release.

What you can try.

Take some wooden wedges and place them on either side of the gearcase inside where its split. Tap them lightly with a hammer and see if you can get the case to drop.
