  • Starting a 50 hp 2-cycle

My 2005 50-hp Yahama outboard doesn't get run often. Starting has gradually gone from hard to not. Seems like old gas gumming up the carbs could be the problem. Here are my questions:
Are gummed up carbs likely the problem?
Is there an easy way to clean the carb jets?
Why can't I find a service manual for the motor?
    Thanks,

I've been beating this ...start problem--on a 2006 for some time. I've re-routed fuel lines, replaced fuel lines and a new 10 micron filter. anti -siphon valve removed from built in fuel tank.

The prime start feature seems to work only under ideal conditions.

BUT, BUT.... I believe I solved my start problem by going through several Primer Pump up Bulbs.......anyway seems like it is starting like it should...much better. Don't know why this is...maybe sucking air at the fittings ????

My local marina gug swears on Evinrude 2+4 fuel condition in the gas. I run it all the time..in everything I own that runs on gas .No problems.

Some folks run Sea Foam throught their engines.

As for the book. I purchased a Yamaha Factory Manual and was not impressed by it. I also purchased a Clymer Manual for 2 strrokes 2-90 HP up to 2002.

Better book (my Opinion) pictures, wiring etc. Very informative.

Let us know what fixes your start problem .

    Cheers !!!
    Hope this helps you.

        Starting a 50 hp 2-cycle

        Just-in-Time,
My boat is kind of lake-locked on an 80-acre lake in Orlando, FL.

        dorf,
After my post, I went out and followed the emergency starting valve procedure exactly...and...it started. Very weak and wouldn,t run for more than a minute after I closed the valve. I repeated the procedure several times with the same results. Even got it in gear and backed the boat out in the hope of running around the lake a while to blow it out. When I tried to shift into forward, naturally it died. And I was 80 feet from the dock with the wind blowing out. Thought it was going to be a long afternoon, but it did restart and run enough to get me back to the dock.

I then pulled brass plugs out of each carb and foul old-smelling gas drained out. I'll clean up the brass plugs and replace and keep trying next week-end.

Thanks to all for your help, even if it's not a Toyota.
