What do the numbers mean?

I have recently bought a 1997 40 HP Yamaha. I understand that the numbers on the side indicate exactly how this motor is equipped. Can someone explain to me what these mean or lead me to a website that does?
I understand the manufactured 1997, not quite that ignorant, but the rest is pretty much greek to me!

M = manual tilt/manual start
L = 20” shaft length
H = tiller handle
W = model year 1998
