  • Winter Layover--Empty tank, or not

Anyone know the real deal?? Had to cut my season short and winterize now. i have 50 gallons of gas left in a 200 gal. aluminum tank. i've read some posts about ethenol oxidizing aluminum tanks and destroying expensive filters, so:
    1. do i try to remove as much gas as possible, then dose with startron and stabil, get fresh gas in spring,or
    2. fill tank now and dose with startron and stabil, and hope $500.00 worth of gas doesnt turn gooey in six months and have to pump out anyway.
no clear cut answer here from what i've read, but i would certainly appreciate your opinions. thanx, capt joe

Last couple of years I have run the tank down as far as practical and added Stabil - one year I ended up with about 20 gallons, the other with about 35 gallons in a 100-gallon tank. I do use Stabil all the time anyway, but double the dose for off season, per the directions on the bottle. Offseason runs from October to late May. In the spring, I start on the trailer with the old fuel, then tank up at the gas station on the way to the ramp. So far it has worked fine.

HI Joe, My boat holds 225 gal in a aluninum tank, throughout the year I keep stablizer in the tank, adding at every fill up. Everything I have read, says to keep the tank full. I have always done this and have never had a problem. A partially emty tank will accumulate condensation, that is a given: it will happen, not a question of when or if. Put the proper amount of stablizer in, and top it off, and you will not have a condensation problem.
